Numbers Missing

OK. I'm weird. No question. When I can't sleep I don't count sheep.

I count cars.

I start with the first car number in the Sprint Cup Series and go forward until I drift off. With each number, I think about the driver, sponsor, car owner and anything else I can that is associated with each team. Usually I only make it through two or three cars before I fall asleep. This morning when I woke up at 3:30 and couldn't go back to sleep, I began counting. And remembering. And counting. All the way from #00 David Reutimann to #99 Carl Edwards...and still no sleep. Sometimes nothing works.

In doing so I realized something about the 2011 Sprint Cup Season. Many of the most famous numbers in NASCAR history will not be on track this year. Here are a few:

#3 - For obvious reasons. The number has not been run since the untimely death of Dale Earnhardt in 2001. Hard to believe it has been 10 years.

#8 - Dale Earnhardt Jr. made this number famous from 1999 to 2007. His grandfather campaigned the same number. The merger of Dale Earnhardt Inc. and Chip Ganassi Racing two years ago saw the elimination of the number.

#10 - Controlled by a few different teams over the past 20 years, including owner/driver Ricky Rudd with the Tide sponsorship in the 1990's.

#12 - Made famous by Bobby Allison in the 1980's, the number has been successfully campaigned in recent years by Jeremy Mayfield and Ryan Newman.

#19 - Downsizing at Richard Petty Motorsports eliminated this number which Ray Evernham brought back to the sport in the 2000's.

#25 - Tim Richmond brought the number tremendous success in the 1980's. After his tragic death from AIDS, teams running the number mostly struggled as compared with the other cars at powerhouse Hendrick Motorsports.

#28 - This is the one I miss the most. Although campaigned by many famous drivers over NASCAR's history including Fred Lorenzen, Buddy Baker and Cale Yarborough, the driver most associated with the number in recent history is Davey Allison. Davey drove the #28 Texaco/Havoline sponsored Ford Thunderbird from 1987 until his death in 1993. He was and remains my favorite driver even though I can't follow him any more. I continued to follow Davey's former team, Robert Yates/Yates Racing until it folded in 2009.

These are a few of the numbers that will not be on the track in 2011. Hopefully at some point we will see some of them reappear in the future.

...and maybe I will be able to sleep tonight : )

Date Night

In 2006 my wife and I decided to institute date night. The reasons for this were numerous and I will not get into them here. Suffice to say we needed it.

There was an Italian restaurant we had been to a few times before this which had good food and atmosphere. Included was a bar which featured live music and comedy each week. A few months prior to our first date night, I had been to said bar to see some friends of mine play jazz on Thursday nights. I had also seen one or two of the touring comedian's shows on Saturdays. I enjoyed both very much, not to mention the fact that the food was delicious and the Guinness was cold.

Now my wife is not a big "bar" person. For that matter, neither am I . However, I convinced her to go with me so that we could hear our friends play one Thursday night. It was a great experience and it became our routine each Thursday until we moved away from this particular town. We loved the music, the food and, especially, spending some quality "non-kid" time with each other.

That was over three years ago and we are desperate to re-institute our date night. Two moves and five jobs (between us) later, our lives have done nothing but get busier. Not only that, but I haven't found a cool place like our little Italian restaurant/bar.

Tonight we will attempt date night once again. Hopefully we can find a suitable place. I have to say, I'm very much looking forward to it. It's extremely important to make it a point to set aside time when it is just you and your spouse. No distractions, no kids. Just the two of you...hanging out and talking and having fun like you did when you were dating.

I recommend it :)

Aub Still Sick

I went to work today after staying and taking Aubrey to the doctor yesterday. Bad sinus infection was the diagnosis and antibiotics were prescribed. Chris stayed with her today but had to leave around 1:00 in order to make it to school for her brand new part-time job in addition to her teaching gig. That meant I had to leave early to make it home so Aub wouldn't be alone too long.

She seems a little better today and hopefully she'll be well enough to go back tomorrow. Lots of juice, meds and rest for her.

Time To Get Started

I've been trying to get motivated to blog for a long time now. My sweet wife does it all the time but I just can't seem to come up with anything interesting to say. It's not like I haven't written before. I used to write articles for my racing site, some of which were even published.

I guess I got a bit burned out.

I decided that this blog would not be limited to racing or Auburn football or foodie stuff...though all are passions of mine. This space will include anything that interests me. Passions...pet peeves...whatever. That may sound a little arrogant but it's not meant to be. It's just that, to keep myself motivated to write consistently, I will have to be inspired.

It's not likely that you will read here about the latest government stimulus program or a review of Mr. Obama's latest speech. You will, hopefully, find something interesting; possibly about my family....my job...my NATIONAL CHAMPION AUBURN TIGERS!!!

Oops...sorry, that slipped out.

Anyway, I hope you will stop by again. I will try to read your blog as well.

TIGERS v. DUCKS

I am so excited that my team is getting an opportunity to play for the National Championship. No one predicted this at the beginning of the season. It still seems like a dream. I remember those close calls throughout the season. Mississippi State in Starkville. Clemson at Jordan-Hare. South Carolina...Alabama...

Yet here we are, with an opportunity to play for it all on January 10. The only thing that would make this better is if I were headed to Glendale to see it for myself.
